Validation of EPA Method 1633 with Semi-Automated Solid Phase Extraction
and LC/MS for Analysis of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in Wastewater

Validation of EPA Method 1633: Semi-Automated Solid Phase Extraction

Validation of EPA Method 1633 has been a critical focus in advancing reliable tools for PFAS detection and analysis. Until recently, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had not released a standardized method for analyzing PFAS in environmental matrices such as groundwater, surface water, and soils. This lack of consistency led many laboratories to develop independent methodologies, resulting in variable outcomes. The introduction and finalization of EPA Method 1633 has resolved these discrepancies by establishing a validated and standardized protocol for PFAS analysis across multiple sample types.

Validation of EPA Method 1633 has enabled greater reproducibility and confidence in PFAS testing, particularly when using semi-automated solid phase extraction systems that align with the method’s requirements.

Finalization of EPA Method 1633

In January 2024, the EPA officially finalized Method 1633, setting a major benchmark in environmental testing. The method provides a complete framework for detecting PFAS in a wide range of complex matrices, including:

  • ✔ Groundwater, surface water, and wastewater

  • ✔ Landfill leachate, soils, and sediments

  • ✔ Biosolids and biological tissue
